The Chop Chair and Table by Philippe Malouin is an evergreen design conceived for use in a range of public and private outdoor spaces. Beautifully proportioned, with subtle curvatures, it is intentionally simple, in both construction and style. Chop reimagines a classic slatted chair archetype to create a silhouette that is immediately recognizable, yet pleasingly unknown. The idea for the design was influenced by Malouin’s work in the art world, where he often utilizes hand-led industrial techniques to develop striking forms that accentuate the object’s materiality. The Chop collection is cut, bent and welded from durable stainless steel, and is available in 4 powder-coated colored finishes. A design for all seasons, Chop is correctly weighted to resist wind, while still being light enough to move around and stack with ease.

A small occasional chair of basic construction that is designed to be made in the simplest way possible. The chair has a sculpture sensibility and is in keeping with the original Ishinomaki Laboratory brief. It only requires 90 degree cuts in its construction and is screwed together using the signature black screws, found across the Ishinomaki Laboratory family of products. Made from western red cedar, the design is sturdy, stable and has a very small footprint. It’s ideal for small spaces, as a place to stop, perch and have a few moments reflection.

The Stilts Side Table consists of a floating volume elevated above the ground. The form is inspired by the vernacular architecture of lakeside cabins common in both Quebec, from where designer Philippe Malouin hales, and in Finland. In the spirit of these informal buildings, over-engineered solutions have been rejected in favour of an intuitive structure. Therefore, the Side Table is simple but effective; a box drawer sits inside a cavity whilst legs support and enclose the volume in a matter-of-fact way; an honest design made from the most honest of materials.

Industrial Office is a new body of work for Salon 94 Design presented during Design Miami/ Basel, 2019. This new series is inspired by an in-depth study on office furniture, and fabricated using a variety of industrial materials and techniques.

Pieces include Nylon Executive Desk, Nylon Sideboard and Nylon Armchairs that use its material properties for movement. Intuitively hand-made steel furniture and pieces coated in textured polyurethane; solid Rubber Chairs with measured amount of flexibility and translucency and a Metal Rug made up of steel wire rings which are held together using an intricate Japanese chainmail pattern.

Study for screens is a research installation commissioned by Hem to explore screen solutions. 

The installation contains visual notes and three-dimensional sketches that investigate what it can mean to separate space. We relocated my studio to New York City ten days before the exhibition opened in order to manufacture as many 'screens' as we could. 

Thirteen experiments were made, documented, and edited into a journal. Seven of these three-dimensional 'sketches' were showed at Wework's Bryant Park space. During nycXdesign.

The super benches have been designed by a range of international designers and have been installed as part of the Kalejdohill project, an initiative to regenerate Kvarnbacken, a park in Järfälla, Sweden. 

For this project, we designed 'Core', our first architectural project. Core is a concrete modular system that assembles itself into a small brutalist structure.

20 planters is the result of a material exploration using Caesarstone, ranging from refined industrial processing to handcrafted techniques. Designing by making was at the heart of this project. Making planters and using Caesarstone were the initial parameters we set ourselves when beginning to work. 

Working within an industrial environment, we set out to insert ourselves within the factory's production line. This was done by manually transforming the pieces by stone carving, inlaying, cutting, grinding, texturing. Vintage Caesarstone is used alongside the current collection, highlighting the material. The planters showcase a spectrum of styles and colours from Caesarstone's palette.

Installation commissioned by Dezeen and Seven Dials. A giant installation of bunting made from transparent PVC designed to celebrate and highlight the Seven Dials area and its landmarks. Waving in the wind and uniting to a ceiling, the sixty bunting lines do not hide Earlham Street but reveal its houses and history, leading the way to the Seven Dials monument.

Blur explores the idea of memory in an increasingly digital world and is a series of ‘paintings’ realised through light and motion. The circles shimmer because LEDs shine light at them, while variations in the speed of rotation affect the colour intensity.

2012, Beech Wood, LEDs

A series of lamps or artificial windows inspired by plantation shutters. Rather than mounted, the shutters are secured to a bare wall and contain an artificial light source. Each individual slat is lined with LEDs that replicate the color temperature of daylight. The light emitted is reflected back from the wall on which the window is mounted to produce the impression that a real window lies behind. Light intensity can be adjusted by manipulating the angle of the shutters. The shapes of the lamps are based on the Tangram: a Chinese dissection puzzle. Each geometric shape of the Tangram shares a set of common proportions, allowing the lamps to be arranged in multiple, complementary configurations.

2012, Hallingdal fabric, Resin

Kvadrat Hallingdal fabric is usually used for the upholstery of furniture where the fabric composes 5-10% of the whole piece and has purely aesthetic or tactile role. Wanting to give the material a more significant role we set out to design a range of stools and chairs that uses Hallingdal fabric as its main material, therefore doing without the usual structural elements. 

The weaving of the fabric is very hard wearing and deep, and after comparing the Hallingdal to certain fibreglass and carbon fiber matting we had the feeling that the Kvadrat fabric could have a structural role as well as an aesthetic one in the creation of a piece of furniture.

By applying a simple action, such as rolling to a nonstructural material, a structural strength can be achieved, f.ex. rim of a paper cup or a rolled up newspaper. Fabric doesn’t react like paper, but the idea is the same: by rolling it up to make it structural, just like a rolled-up sock it starts to become more rigid. When paired with resin, the fabric acts in a similar way to laminated fibreglass or carbon fibre.

The result is a series of stools that use the same piece of fabric from the inside to the outside, for its structure and for its finish. The Hardie Stool is light and playful, warm and tactile.

The Yachiyo metal rug is made using the intricate Japanese ‘12-in-2’ chain mail method. That method is virtually indestructible as well as it creates a very stable membrane, structural yet flexible.

After exploring ideas for a range of furniture made using this technique, we chose to create a rug because the attention is focused solely on the 2-D object itself, the craftsmanship can be better admired this way.

The final piece presents an isometric rectangular prism which was created through playing with ideas of perspective, so that a two dimensional object like a rug could visually spring into the 3D realm.

The metal rug is completely handmade from galvanized steel wire. The looped wire is taken and wound into a tight coil which is then hand cut into small rings. These are riveted together one-by-one in the ‘12-in-2’ pattern, which consists of 2 central rings with 12 perpendicular rings connected around. This process is painstakingly repeated to create the rug and it involves thousands of hand-manufacturing hours, since it is impossible to make by machine.

The rug is named after Yachiyo Kawana, an amazing intern that worked on this project from the beginning and is, just like the chain mail method, Japanese.

The entire rug was handmade in London by Yachiyo Kawana, Greg Austin, Carlo Cialli, Anna Perugini, Vic Margevich, Maria Kuzmenko, Midea Diomideia Kolani, Xue Dong, Khadija Durbar, Jade Blair, Zahra Rajaei, and it required more than 3000 meters of galvanized wire and 3000 hours of work to make it.

Time is a quality that makes Lobmeyr so special.

Great investments of time are taken in producing and decorating the crystalware that possesses timeless design, or up to 100 hours for a single object. This investment in time differentiates Lobmeyr from other glass manufacturers and was the inspiration for Time elapsed.

The flow of sand through an hourglass is traditionally used to keep track of elapsed time. It is also physical representation of the fine line between the past and the future. Through the machine in this room, the deposition of sand forms not minutes and hours on a clock face but abstract and changing patterns, illustrating the link between time and decoration. The sand also holds a physical connection with Lobmeyr, since it is the raw material from which the crystal is created.

The hourglasses in this room were made by introducing a new element to two existing glasses from Lobmeyr's Alpha series. A turned wooden connector transforms the vessels into very different functional objects. Here the flow of sand expresses how much time it has taken to engrave a decoration. At the one minute mark, the decoration illustrated on the side of the hourglass is simple, at the five minute mark it becomes more intricate, and so on.

The paper vessels are a result from a design performance that lasted a week. The only request was to work with paper.

The vessels came to life by mixing a material with a manufacturing technique that usually don't go together. By throwing thermal receipt paper rolls in a similar way as you would throw a pot the vessels found their shape. They obtained the black colour patterns solely by sanding them with sandpaper as the heat generated then coloured the thermal paper.
